Nationwide Patient Diagnostic Platform for a Healthcare Technology Company

Modeled the architecture for a PDA-based patient diagnostic platform designed for nationwide deployment across private practices and hospital facilities.


Client Context

A healthcare technology company was building a point-of-care diagnostic application for handheld PDA devices, intended for deployment across private medical practices and hospital facilities nationwide — a category of software where reliability and clinical usability weren't optional.

The Challenge

A nationwide clinical tool has to work consistently across a wide range of practice settings and integrate cleanly with backend databases to deliver accurate diagnostic feedback to clinicians at the point of care, on hardware (PDAs) far more constrained than the software architecture patterns of the time typically assumed.

Approach

I modeled the application architecture for the PDA-based diagnostic platform, defining how it would integrate with backend databases to retrieve and process the data needed to generate diagnostic feedback for clinicians. The work used TOGAF ADM and service-oriented architecture (SOA) modeling methodology, along with UML, wireframes, data flow diagrams, and entity relationship diagrams, to ensure the resulting design would scale consistently from a single private practice to hospital-scale deployment.

Outcomes

The resulting architecture gave the company a consistent, database-integrated diagnostic platform designed to function reliably across the full range of intended deployment settings — from individual private practices to hospital facilities — supporting the company's nationwide rollout ambitions for the product.
