Digital Integration Hub for a Global Pharmaceutical Enterprise

Architected a Gartner-aligned Digital Integration Hub to modernize data interoperability across a global pharmaceutical enterprise's cloud and legacy systems of record.


Client Context

A global pharmaceutical company operating across multiple regions relied on a patchwork of point-to-point integrations between core systems of record (SORs), a commercial iPaaS platform, and cloud services. As the business scaled, this pattern was becoming a bottleneck: every new consumer of enterprise data required a new custom integration, and there was no shared, governed pattern for real-time data exchange across domains.

The Challenge

The organization needed a way to expose and consume enterprise data reliably at scale — without either a costly platform rip-and-replace or an ever-growing tangle of one-off integrations. Data interoperability issues were slowing downstream initiatives, and there was no architectural backbone capable of supporting event-driven, near-real-time exchange as usage grew.

Approach

As Lead Solution Architect, I designed a Digital Integration Hub (DIH) aligned to Gartner's DIH reference pattern, built on event-driven microservices. The architecture used AWS-native services — API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, S3, CloudFront, and Cognito — integrated alongside the organization's existing iPaaS layer rather than replacing it, preserving prior investment while adding a scalable, decoupled data-access layer. I mapped domain and cross-domain value streams using packaged business capabilities (PBCs) so the integration layer was organized around how the business actually operated, not around individual system boundaries. In a parallel workstream, I also directed integration architecture for a global Digital Employee Experience platform, connecting the iPaaS layer, an event-messaging platform, and AWS to support a global mobile application used to digitize core employee processes.

Outcomes

The DIH gave the enterprise a reusable, governed pattern for exposing data to new consumers — replacing ad hoc point-to-point builds with a standardized, event-driven access layer. This improved interoperability and reliability across core systems of record, reduced the marginal cost of onboarding new integration consumers, and positioned the organization to scale toward real-time, event-driven data exchange as adoption grew.
